David Oscar Dogbe Shares Hilarious Culture Shock

Ghanaian creative artiste, David Oscar Dogbe, recently shared a humorous cultural mix-up he experienced during a meetup with friends in Germany. The comedian-turned-reggae musician recounted the incident in a skit on his YouTube channel, highlighting how language differences led to an unexpectedly awkward moment.

In the video, David Oscar jokingly explained that in many cultures, "chewing gum" is casually shortened to "gum" without changing its meaning. However, unaware that the German translations for "chewing gum" and "gum" have entirely different meanings, he unknowingly stirred confusion at the table.

"I had just finished a hearty lunch with friends in Germany and wanted a chewing gum. Coming from Ghana, I assumed I could simply refer to it as 'gum,' as we often do," he narrated.

His request, however, triggered startled reactions, with some friends exchanging bewildered glances as if he had said something inappropriate. Determined to get his chewing gum, he persisted - until a colleague leaned in and revealed the issue: in German, "gum" refers to a condom.

"That’s why everyone was staring at me! I was advised to stick with the full translation -'chewing gum' - and never shorten it in German," David Oscar explained.

Reflecting on the incident, he added, "O boy! I really caused a stir with my innocent mistake. This culture shock has made me think twice before speaking in German."

While David Oscar initially made his mark in Ghana's comedy scene, he has since transitioned into reggae music. His discography boasts a string of impactful hits, including ‘Onyame Wo Mu’, ‘Get the One Day’ featuring Afriyie Wutah, and ‘We Are the Light’, a powerful collaboration with reggae veteran Shasha Marley.
